Threading, or Khite, has been around for many hundreds of years, and continues to be a traditional way of removing hair in parts of Asia and the Middle East. A few years ago, it experienced a sort of come back in the West as all sorts of Eastern things (including Rumi and hennaing) became popular. It is still widely available in ethic salons and salons specializing in natural hair removals.

Threading involves quickly rolling a twisted piece of thread back and forth across clean skin. Hairs become trapped in the string and are ripped out or break off. This process generally needs to be done by a professional, since speed and technique are important - although there are Khite kits out there if you want to learn how to do it yourself. Someone who has done the process many times can manipulate the string expertly, causing most hairs to be ripped out (rather than broken off) and causing hairs to be removed only from those areas they are not wanted. This process is most often used for eyebrows and facial hair.

If nothing else, threading is a very interesting and effective way to get rid of facial and brow hair. Watching a professional at work is really fascinating, since the hands basically race across the face, threading and twisting the thread. In many cases, the aesthetician will have the string looped intricately around their hands, to better be able to control the string. Some salons now use machines that hold threads during Khite. This method is environmentally friendly and far quicker than tweezing alone. It is less expensive than waxing. Since many hairs are pulled so quickly, some women find that there is less pain that tweezing, partly because the whole thing is over so fast. Results last up to three weeks or as little as two weeks.

Like other methods of hair removal such as plucking or waxing, threading can result in skin irritation and ingrown hairs, however, hair re-growth becomes finer and more sparse after regular treatments. As the top layers of skin are not peeled or traumatized, threading is also recommended and an excellent option for those who have sensitive skin and who use Retin-A, Accutane, and similar products. Advantages of threading

Threading has several advantages over other methods. It is not only an inexpensive method of hair removal, but also fast and far less painful than some other options. It is a convenient method for removing hair from areas like the eyebrows and face and its effect lasts from two to four weeks. One of the best features of threading is that it is suitable for even skin that is too sensitive for laser hair removal or waxing. It takes no more than 15 minutes to get both brows done, which makes eyebrow threading particularly popular. And as no chemicals are involved there is no risk of a reaction setting in.

Disadvantages of threading
There are some disadvantages of threading as well. It is hard to find a really good practitioner of this hair removal method, that can also be painful to an extent. Its side effects can include folliculitis, a bacterial infection of the hair follicles, reddening of the skin and skin pigment changes. Its other major drawback is that it works only on flat surfaces. Threading is difficult to perform on body areas that are not flat, such as the bikini line and the knees. Those suffering from acne should especially avoid threading because it can cause severe acne to rupture. All this gives shaving an edge over threading and other methods.
